CHOICE Review

In this collection, Sears and Marshall have constructed a thought-provoking and, at times, intimate look at curriculum development and how it should be taught. Through a unique combination of autobiography, conversation, and essay, each contributor tries to empower curriculum teachers and students by encouraging reflective and critical thought and by rejecting narrow, static conceptions of curriculum. The stories of 24 curriculum teachers are organized into 4 contextual perspectives of curriculum thought and action--self, teacher, community, and field. The autobiographical nature of the stories serves to inspire the reader to envision the possibilities and results of effective curriculum pedagogy. Following each collection of stories is a brief contribution by notable "contestaires" such as Michael Apple and Maxine Greene. Each section concludes with a thoughful three-way conversation about the preceding essays. Both novice and experienced curriculum teachers and thinkers should find this book helpful and motivating. The format and perspective are refreshing enough to attract the veteran, and the readable text, outstanding bibliographies, and how-to suggestions are valuable to the beginning curriculum student or teacher.
