This timely volume provides a constructivist interpretation of developmentally appropriate curriculum in early childhood education. Rheta DeVries, one of the founders of constructivist early education, and her colleagues provide the theoretical rationale and practical advice for conducting specific activities in the classroom. Descriptive vignettes are used to show how children's reasoning and teacher interventions are transformed in the course of extended experience with a physical phenomenon or group game. Throughout the book, constructivist teaching is illustrated and contrasted with the approaches found in three other classroom types.
Includes bibliographical references and index.

CHOICE Review
DeVries, an author-advocate of Piagetian principles in the classroom, makes an argument for play as an essential part of early childhood education. Rejecting aimless play as fully as highly structured, teacher-directed learning, DeVries and her fellow authors posit four different types of classrooms, with two types exemplifying academically oriented programs and two developmental. Drawing on activities in specific classrooms, she indicates how the teacher helps extend the children's investigations. Studying shadows, experimenting with water, using pattern blocks and cooking are expanded into solid intellectual experiences when the teachers allow the children time for exploration and when they present the materials in ways that encourage the children's autonomy. Three chapters on games in the curriculum demonstrate the learning potential in a variety of games as well as the benefits of learning about rules through negotiating them. In each example the authors outline the teaching principles involved. The presentation is clear and persuasive. Photographs and diagrams add to the text by illustrating the discussions. Like George E. Forman and David S. Kuschner's The Child's Construction of Knowledge (1983), this book shows Piagetian principles in action. Recommended for upper-division undergraduates and above. S.
