In this book George Kubler considers the aesthetic responses of native Americans, Europeans, and Americanists to indigenous art of the Americas. Chronicling the lives and writings of 70 historians, explorers, missionaries, archaeologists, anthropologists and art historians from 1492-1984, he focuses on how these individuals differed in their ways of evaluating Amerindian art forms, and what this reveals about the art and about the development aesthetic thought.

CHOICE Review

Kubler's work will prove to be of great worth to scholars of pre-Columbian art and culture. It is claimed to be a historiographic approach to Amerindian art, art primarily from Central and South America. The work is actually highly theoretical and many of the explanations require considerable unraveling in order to be understood. Footnotes are everywhere. One cannot help but be impressed by the manner in which Kubler integrates the many theoretical concepts from anthropology, history, and art with the creative output of numerous prominent thinkers and painters of the past two centuries. The main three features of the book are the 42 pages of notes to the text that also contain constant reference to pertinent works; 28 pages of a primarily classical bibliography; and, most interestingly, a biographical dictionary that describes the life and work of 70 significant individuals who made pronouncements about early Amerindian art between 1492 and 1984. Recommended for those conducting research in this particular field. -N. C. Greenberg, Western Michigan University
