Library Journal Review

Borysenko, co-founder and director of the Mind/Body Clinic at New England Deaconess Hospital/Harvard Medical School, describes the clinic's ten-week program for learning to ``mind the body'' through a medical synthesis of neurology, immunology, and psychology. She provides step-by-step instructions to the clinic's techniques while suggesting how they can be adapted for individual use. Combining meditation, breath control and stretching exercises, and mindfulness, and drawn from work with patients aged 17 to 93, these techniques help ease the stress of illnessparticularly illness caused by stressby exploiting the body's natural capacity for healing. Readers who master them can achieve an admirable balance between inner self and environment. Jodith Janes, Univ. Hospitals of Cleveland (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review

Borysenko, an immunologist and psychotherapist, is involved in research and therapy regarding mental exercises that can unleash the mind's power to influence physical and mental well-being. This approach involves altering the ways one views problems, mistakes, confrontations, and relationships by ``reframing'' them in a constructive rather than destructive fashion. In order to find one's true ``core of self,'' Borysenko endorses meditation, the practice of diaphragmatic breathing, and the limiting of thoughts to one focus to induce a ``relaxation response,'' which has proven scientifically viable in lowering blood pressure and reducing pain. This volume challenges individuals to take control of their minds and bodies and thus more effectively handle stress-related illnesses and the pressures of daily life. Contains helpful chapter summaries. Bibliography; to be indexed. MDS. 616.89'14 Mind and body therapies [CIP] 86-32235
