CHOICE Review

In December 1970, the US Congress passed and President Richard Nixon signed the Occupational Safety Act (OSHAct) that established minimum worker safety standards for employees of businesses associated with interstate commerce. Since the publication of the third edition (1990) of this laboratory handbook, many academic and industrial laboratories have come under the OSHA Laboratory Standard, a performance standard protecting workers. Under this 1990 program, goals are set but the methodology is undefined and heavy responsibility is placed on the laboratory manager. This new work updates and extends the scope of the previous edition by incorporating new EPA actions on radioactive materials and infectious wastes, and additional rules resulting from the 1992 Bloodborne Pathogen Standard. With assistance from 18 contributors across North America, editor Furr provides broad-spectrum guidance for the varied activities, materials, and personnel associated with scientific laboratories.
