CHOICE Review

This study offers a close analysis of Olsen's short stories, an invaluable interview with Olsen, and a short section of critical responses. Frey (College of Wooster) focuses on Olsen's commitment to writing about "life comprehensions," ordinary human experiences, especially those of women and working-class people. Olsen's intensely felt and expressed stories, told in "transformative" language, have caused many readers to empathize strongly with her characters. The interview with Olsen reveals the connections between the actual people and events of her life and her nonautobiographical stories. The critics' section discusses comments both apt and inapt. Invaluable for English department libraries, this work complements Constance Coiner's Better Red: The Writing and Resistance of Tillie Olsen and Meridel Le Sueur (CH, Oct'95), which focuses on the authors' relationship to the Communist Party; Mickey Pearlman and Abby Werlock's Tillie Olsen (CH, Dec'91), with its interview of Olsen and comments on her Silences and Yonnondio; Abigail Martin's briefer Tillie Olsen (CH, Jan'85); and Elaine Neil Orr's Tillie Olsen and a Feminist Spiritual Vision (CH, Dec'87), which gives a religious interpretation of Olsen's work.
