CHOICE Review

The intended audiences for this sourcebook are content teachers and reading teachers whose objective is to design reading/study skill instruction for their students. The book is divided into two parts, the first providing a theoretical framework and an examination of thinking and studying tasks, the second concerning itself with methods for motivating students, assessing reading competencies, utilizing computers, and providing for special student needs. An overview of process and strategy topics opens each chapter, in which issues are examined, research summarized, and suggestions provided. The remainder of the chapter consists of topical bibliographies developed primarily from Resources in Education and Current Indexes to Journals in Education. With a few exceptions, the annotated citations date from 1980 to 1984. Author and subject indexes conclude the volume. A well-indexed subject appears to be ``students with special needs,'' which includes learning disabled, gifted, minority, and English as a second language students. This source will be of use to both beginning and experienced researchers of content reading teaching. It should be used in conjunction with printed and online post-1984 ERIC indexes. Recommended for academic libraries that support teacher education and reading education.-N.S. Osborne, SUNY College at Oswego
