Library Journal Review

This volume adequately fulfills its claim to be a guide to reading and research for undergraduates and general readers. There are, however, shortcomings that could easily have been avoided. First, there are plays for which a translation is recommended but no critical sources are given, e.g., for two of Plautus's better-known plays, Miles Gloriosus and Mostellaria. Second, the introduction states that the book-length criticism is ``cross-listed'' under both the individual play and the playwright. These repeated citations to the same source add bulk without substance; a brief citation giving appropriate page numbers after the initial entry would have sufficed. Despite these drawbacks, this work meets a need in the study of Greek and Roman drama that has previously gone unsatisfied. A fine tool for undergraduates.-- Marjorie F. CHOICE Review

An interesting work geared toward general readers who use public, high school, and undergraduate libraries. For more scholarly users more relevant bibliographies would be the reprints, with new introductions, of bibliographies from the journal The Classical World (published as The Classical World Bibliography of Greek Drama and Poetry, 1978, and . . .Roman Drama and Poetry, 1978) plus T. Gwinup and F. Dickinson's Greek and Roman Authors (2nd ed., 1982; 1st ed., CH, Oct'73). Forman's book provides access both to monographs and to individual works within collections of plays. The volume begins with an overview of Greek and Roman drama, starting with general works; then come chapters covering the following playwrights: Aeschylus, Aristophanes, Ennius, Euripides, Menander, Plautus, Seneca, Sophocles, and Terence. Within each chapter there are three sections, one covering translations and commentaries, the other two covering recommended criticism and general criticism. All titles are recommended by the author on the basis of reference to standard works and some recent publications. All entries are annotated with useful comments; some libraries could use this source as a collection development tool. A title index would have added to the strength of the book; there is an index for the editors and authors. A worthwhile reference resource for anyone who deals with this subject matter at a basic level. -M. C. Su, Pennsylvania State University, Altoona Campus
