CHOICE Review

This collection examines the psychological and organizational work environment of women. Chapters are individually authored and present a carefully documented examination of the topic by reviewing past and current research, considering practical implications, and proposing changes in individual and organizational behavior. The book is divided into three parts. The first part covers general issues such as types of work assigned to women; the power-based relations of gender that impact the activities of job assessment and selection; equal opportunity policies; and women's training needs. Part 2 examines problems working women face, including sexual harassment; women's reproductive health in the context of work; reproductive hazards at work; and women returning to the workforce after a career break. Part 3 examines women in middle-class careers--entrepreneurs, doctors, computer professionals, managers, and politicians. The overall perspective of this collection challenges the status quo, such as the resistance to suggestions for changing the organization of work, and addresses the issues of working women as related to politics and power. Upper-division and graduate collections. K. C. Brannen Creighton University
