Library Journal Review
The author, who served on the Three Mile Island crisis management team, has done an extensive study of crises in business. In this book he describes and analyzes several recent crises including TMI, Ohio S & L, Union Carbide, and Rely Tampons. He advises managers on how to forecast a crisis, isolate it, and manage it. He also discusses crisis communications and hostile takeovers. This book is one of the first to gather such information together and combine it with actual case studies. A practical and informative work on an important topic for managers today and tomorrow. Grace Klinefelter, Ft. Lauderdale Coll. Lib., Fla. (c) Copyright 2010. Crises are important, immediate, and inevitable challenges that also present opportunities, says Fink, a public-relations/management consultant. His laboratory consists of recent crucial events involving business firms, two with central roles for US governors (Three Mile Island, the Tylenol manufacturer, Union Carbide-Bhopal, Ohio Savings & Loan, etc.). Hostile takeovers are also shown to be a crisis form subject to Fink's recommendations. After defining and illustrating crises, Fink demonstrates that forecasting and planning for crisis management are not only possible but necessary, although many firms lack such preparations. The author identifies four stages in dealing with a crisis: identification, isolation, management, and follow-up; these stages are treated through further illustration as well as cursory analysis of technique. When discussing the special problem of managing communication, Fink pays careful attention to the message and the media. A chapter on stress as a management concern precedes lengthy retelling of the handling of four crises. The book's values-reading ease, grounding in reality, and appeal to the proactive apprehensions of managers-must be weighed against its disjointed superficiality and anecdotal, journalistic breeziness. Too little rigorous understanding is sought, and too much insight relies on ad hoc postmortems of instances cited. Cautiously recommended for upper-division and graduate collections.-J.C.
