Booklist Review

Gr. 6-10. A clearly written biography of Nehru, this sketches in his family background, education (Harrow, Cambridge), and arranged marriage, then details the gradual breaking away from his family's expectations as he became increasingly involved in the Indian nationalist movement. Inspired and encouraged by Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru led others to nonviolent resistance of British rule. After years of struggle, many of them spent imprisoned for acts of civil disobedience, he became India's first prime minister in 1947. This portrait shows Nehru somewhat at a distance, depicting more of his public than his private life. It clearly reveals the complex issues of his time, his role in bringing about change, and his deep commitment to his family, his mentor, and his humanitarian values. Black-and-white photographs on almost every page enhance the reader's understanding of Nehru's life and times. A good, standard work on a significant figure in modern history.
