Booklist Review

Gr. 6-10. The story of Isabella and Ferdinand of Spain seems like a television miniseries in the making: palace intrigues, duels, and bullfights in a picturesque land dramatically establish the story of this pivotal fifteenth-century royal alliance. What's more, according to this well-written account, Isabella and Ferdinand accomplished some far-reaching reforms that helped bring Spain into the modern world and establish a national identity. One of their most famous decisions, dramatized in the book's attention-catching opening, was the financing of Christopher Columbus' voyages; on the other hand, their sponsoring of the Inquisition, though devoutly intentioned, is shown to have backfired on Spain and robbed the nation of the creative thought that resulted in the cultural blossoming found in the rest of Europe. Illustrated by black-and-white photos of the period's grand architecture, coins, sculpture, engravings, and portraits, this thoroughly researched biography will be as valuable as the other useful volumes in this ambitious series.
