CHOICE Review

Tedeschi, a psychologist, and Felson, a sociologist, propose a provocative social interactionist theory of coercive behavior. Part 1 is a critical review and evaluation of traditional theories and research on aggression (including biological and physiological, learning theory, and criminological perspectives.) Part 2 presents their theory, based on notions of rational choice. The authors acknowledge the role of individual differences and the larger social structure but emphasize social situations and interactions. They focus on social conflict and concepts of power, influence, social identity, and retributive justice, and substitute the language of coercive actions for aggression. The book focuses on "direct, face-to-face confrontations between individuals in which threats are made or in which one of the parties attempts to impose some form of harm on the other." Individual chapters consider coercion and aggression, decision making, perceived injustices and the expression of grievances, and the role of social identities. Part 3 offers applications of social interactionist theory to coercion by parents against their children and to sexual coercion. A well-organized, referenced, and indexed volume. Upper-division undergraduate through professional. C. S. Widom; SUNY at Albany
