Analyzing and interpreting the mounds of notes you have accumulated from the field can be daunting tasks. Sometimes it′s unclear which analytic strategy will best answer the questions that first drew you into the field in the first place. This brief volume outlines four key interpreting strategies for dealing with qualitative data: ethnomethodology, semiotics, dramaturgical analysis, and deconstruction. The author examines the strengths and weaknesses of each strategy and shows you when to use them. In addition, each technique is applied to a single data set to illustrate potential differences in results. Strategies for Interpreting Qualitative Data is an ideal tool for teaching students to analyze and interpret qualitative data. Professionals involved in qualitative methods, sociology, anthropology, and nursing will find assistance in this volume.

CHOICE Review

Feldman provides a brief introductory review of four strategies to analyze qualitative data based on ethnomethodology, semiotics, dramaturgy, and deconstruction. The author devotes a chapter to each theory and its corresponding analytic techniques, drawing on examples from her four-year case study of a campus housing department at a major state university. Closing with an insightful discussion of the similarities and differences in these four analytic strategies, Feldman encourages others to combine techniques, if appropriate, in developing a better understanding of phenomena under investigation. Offering movement away from preestablished interpretations, these strategies are intended to facilitate the creation of new knowledge. Presented in a clear, understandable, and organized format, this book provides a broad, albeit superficial, comparative starting point for researchers considering various techniques for interpreting qualitative data. References furnish readers with other works that offer more in-depth treatments of a particular theoretical and analytic approach. Requiring some familiarity with social theory and research methods, this book is recommended for upper-division undergraduates through professionals.
