Publishers Weekly Review

K-Gr 2-Unlike most bilingual picture books, this volume tells the whole story twice, first in Spanish and then in English, with the illustrations remaining the same for each telling. In Baldomero's, a young boy is reluctant to invite his classmate Tito, who is deaf, to his seventh birthday party. Baldomero follows his parents' suggestion and finally invites him. When Tito shows up at the party with art supplies and teaches everyone how to paint, Baldomero realizes that he doesn't need to know sign language to communicate with Tito. The author takes a delicate subject matter, makes it real and believable, and articulates a message of inclusion. This is a skillful rendering of a topic that does not receive much attention. The full-spread watercolor illustrations capture the homey scenes with enough detail, and the cartoon characters, with oversize heads and big smiles, bring lightness to the story. The suggested activities at the end of the book aid parents and teachers who want to further explore the story. With its short sentences and accessible vocabulary, this title is ideal for beginning readers. Recommended for school and public libraries, as well as bookstores.Cristi Jenkins, Access & Programs, Fort Vancouver Regional Library, WA (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC.
