School Library Journal Review

Gr 8 Up-- Each of these book presents a collection of essays that offer conflicting viewpoints on controversial issues. The articles are prefaced by the authors' credentials (or the source of the article) and ``Points to Consider'': questions designed to provide reader focus. Special features are a combination of vocabulary lists, relevant political cartoons, and brief discussions and exercises on various types of bias and author's point of view. Format is generally pleasing, with frequent use of illustrations. Blocked material, while usually supportive of the surrounding article, may be distracting to some readers. Authors include well-known public figures. These informative, well-balanced titles will be very useful in provoking reasoned thought on contemporary issues. --Rosie Peasley, Sylvan Union School District, Modesto, CA (c) Copyright 2010.
