CHOICE Review

It is debatable whether the sexual abuse of children (i.e., incest, molestation, rape) is presently more prevalent in North America than at any other period and place of history. However, the reported incidents of such abuse increased 59 from 1983 to 1984 and public discourse of such matters make up today's headlines and provide grist for the talk shows. The Everstines draw upon their considerable experience to provide advice regarding professional intervention. An overview of the problem of molestation is followed by a systematic approach for mental health service providers involved in the assessment and treatment of sexually traumatized children and adolescents. Although sexual abuse is not a simple matter, nearly every aspect of treatment and intervention is here discussed--from ascertaining whether the child has been molested, to dealing with adults who were abused as children, to describing legal aspects of prosecuting and trying offenders. For the therapist who already has read David Finkelhor's authoritative Child Sexual Abuse (CH, Apr '85), this timely title will provide specific guidelines on handling such cases. Recommended for libraries of mental health professionals and for university collections. -W. B. Dragoin, Georgia Southwestern College
