This book examines the worldwide growth of elderly populations and its consequences for future care, and the associated costs for this sector of the population. Living a longer life does not necessarily imply an improvement in the quality of life. Important issues concerning the overall quality of additional years gained through increase in life expectancy are addressed in this book. Progress in specific dimensions of wellbeing are described. Recent gains in knowledge are reviewed, together with advances in our understanding of falls, sensory disorders, mental health in old age, osteoporosis, incontinence, drug therapy and iatrogenic disorders. The book extends outside medical care to encompass the family, which is the key issue in developing countries, community care, nursing home and hospice care; health care services that are particularly appreciated by older people are described. It will provide readers with a knowledge base for developing policies and programs that will advance the wellbeing of the elderly people of the world.

CHOICE Review

Solicited by the World Health Organization, and written by international experts, these papers on health and aging "summarize current knowledge, highlight progress, and identify significant future issues" in the areas of gerontological demographics, function/dysfunction, disease processes, health care delivery, education and personnel needs, and social policy. Although chapters meet the goals as stated, the same information can be found in most current geriatric health texts. The unique contribution of this book could have been a more thorough analysis of health and aging in less developed countries (LDCs). The foreword states that issues are presented in a "global context"; however, a true world perspective is lacking. Most chapter authors are from Western countries, and their papers reflect the gerontological concerns of the developed world. Although the book acknowledges that in the near future, the greatest impact of an increasingly aged population will fall upon LDCs, only 6 of the 42 chapters give more than passing reference to aging issues in these countries. Recommended for libraries seeking a concise review of health and aging issues in the developed world. Those desiring more information on aging in the LDCs would best refer to publications of the UN or the International Association of Gerontology. Upper-division and graduate collections. -M. A.
