Accelerated Reader is a program based on the fact that students become more motivated to read if they are tested on the content of the books they have read and are rewarded for correct answers. Students read each book, individually take the test on the computer, and receive gratification when they score well. Schools using the Accelerated Reader program have seen a significant increase in reading among their students.

These books help teens, who often feel uncomfortable talking about their problems, find the information they need.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 62) and index.

Provides basic information about the welfare system and dispels myths about welfare recipients.

School Library Journal Review

Gr 6 Up‘A balanced and informative treatment of public-welfare services as they affect young people. The author describes the history of programs such as Aid to Families with Dependent Children, Medicaid, and housing assistance. She discusses changes resulting from the 1996 Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act. Erlbach lists circumstances that cause people to become part of the welfare system, explains the welfare application process, and outlines recipients' rights. She also gives advice for coping with the embarrassment, resentment, anger, and depression that may effect those on welfare. A section is devoted to obtaining emergency assistance. This is a generally sympathetic and supportive analysis. The text gives useful, practical guidance and encourages readers to prepare for a better future by seizing opportunities for education and job training and by constructive modes of behavior. Black-and-white and some full-color photos appear throughout. A valuable, timely addition to YA collections.‘Libby K. White, Schenectady County Public Library, NY (c) Copyright 2010.
