School Library Journal Review

Gr 7 Up‘Eisenpreis's experience as a breast-cancer survivor lends a personal and authoritative touch to this thorough and reassuring volume. The author's purpose is to educate young women about their breasts and breast cancer, and particularly to address the concerns of those who have a family member or close friend battling the disease. The author pinpoints and answers the often-unspoken anxieties that surround a diagnoses of breast cancer, clearly working from the philosophy that knowledge dissipates fear. She discusses puberty, the role of fashion in breast perception, common-sense health tips for cancer prevention, various diseases, plastic surgery, and self-exams. The treatment of breast cancer, in particular, includes a medical discussion encompassing the nature of the disease, mammograms and other diagnostic tools, and the range of treatments. Personal interviews with other survivors highlight the flow of information. The overriding tone is one of hope. Carole G. Vogel's Will I Get Breast Cancer? (Julian Messner/Silver Burdett, 1995) conveys much the same information in a question-and-answer format, with a particularly good chapter on "Coping When a Mother Has Breast Cancer."‘Joyce Adams Burner, Hillcrest Library, Prairie Village, KS (c) Copyright 2010.
