CHOICE Review

Manufacturing 2000 by Duncan (Director of Materials Management, McDonnell Douglas) projects current US manufacturing trends into the 21st century, resulting in an exciting perspective on the future. A central theme is that organizations should understand change and must develop strategies to gain the most competitive advantage from it. The author provides a comprehensive and well-organized model to guide companies in preparing for the future. Elements of manufacturing (i.e., personnel, methods, materials, and machines) as well as environmental influences are reviewed in the context of the primary functions of business to identify an optimum path to use in managing change. The book is more specific and prophetic than Competing in World-Class Manufacturing: America's 21st Century Challenge by the National Center for Manufacturing Sciences (1990), although the latter treats financial aspects that are largely omitted from Duncan's text. An earlier, more general treatment of the future of manufacturing is Dynamic Manufacturing: Creating the Learning Organization by Robert H. Hayes, Steven C. Wheelwright, and Kim B. Clark. Duncan's volume is well supported by exhibits, diagrams, an index, and bibliography. The book is accessible to several readership levels, although a glossary would have been helpful for readers with nonbusiness backgrounds. Upper-division undergraduate through professional. W. C. Struning; Seton Hall University
