CHOICE Review

This clearly written and well-organized book introduces "the problems, both scientific and economic, of quantifying the magnitude and value of biodiversity..." and answers "questions about the current rates of loss of biodiversity." Dobson accomplishes this by using interesting and current case studies and examples. Chapters include a description of biodiversity, a discussion on extinctions and how they are quantified, criteria to classify endangered species, how extinctions can be prevented, and the human role in altering the earth's environment. He suggests ways to resolve the "debate between economic development and the conservation of biodiversity," though some, such as reforming world trade, will not likely occur any time soon. Available data are generally interpreted carefully, except, perhaps, those that describe the effects of climate change on polar ice caps. Numbering tables and figures would have reduced some confusion, and including citations would have been helpful. Highly recommended for undergraduates through faculty. E. H.
