For most of the twentieth century, the principles of the "Chicago School" have guided urban analysts throughout the world. Los Angeles has been regarded as an exception to the rules governing the growth of American cities. But just as the Chicago School emerged at a time when that city was reaching new national prominence, Los Angeles is now making its impression on the minds of urbanists across the world.

From Chicago to L.A. begins the task of defining an alternative agenda for urban studies and examines the case for shifting the focus of urban studies from Chicago to Los Angeles. The authors, experienced scholars from a variety of disciplines, examine:

The concepts that have blocked our understanding of Southern California cities The imaginative structures that people have been using to understand and explain Los Angeles The utility of the "Los Angeles School" of urbanism

CHOICE Review

Dear (Univ. of Southern California) argues that theoretical principles developed from studying Los Angeles-style urbanism should be used to understand the current state of urban development and the future of US cities. This new perspective, he argues, is more appropriate for analyzing postindustrial and postmodern cities than is the framework developed by the Chicago School in the 1920s. To address these ambitious goals and perhaps formalize the Los Angeles school of urban analysis, Dear has assembled an impressive number of scholars from different disciplines and with different research methodologies who share the common interest of studying metropolitan Los Angeles. Each chapter starts by referencing the Chicago School and then moves on to develop alternative theoretical approaches of urban development based on the Los Angeles experience. The authors examine a broad range of issues facing cities including economic development, role of municipal government, growth of homelessness, role of gangs, development of virtual communities, and environmental issues. However, similar to the Chicago School, this otherwise very comprehensive book is short on the role of gender in urban development. Nevertheless, the book provides a useful framework for urban analysis, leaving the reader with hope for the future of cities. Graduate students and faculty. G. Rabrenovic Northeastern University
