CHOICE Review

More than 60 years after its conclusion, WW II continues to fascinate Americans. This almanac, the latest in the "Almanacs of American Wars" series, seeks to recount the US war effort on a day-by-day basis. Dickson (National Defense Univ.) has compiled a number of guides aimed at general users and beginning researchers. His focus in this source is on the military operations of the American armed forces. A beginning essay provides a historical overview of American diplomacy and strategy from 1936 through 1945. Brief introductory essays explain the almanac's organization and the criteria used for including events. Appendixes offer short biographies for key American military and political leaders, maps for the main theaters of operations and battles, and a glossary of terms. Also included are an extensive bibliography and a name/subject cross-reference. The chronology is organized by date and then by geographic area or military theater. It begins in 1922 with Mussolini's seizure of power in Italy, skips ahead to the 1930s, and becomes daily with America's entry into the war. This source will be useful for those interested in the US role in the conflict. It is a useful supplement for other more comprehensive chronologies. Summing Up: Recommended. Military collections, public and school libraries, and undergraduate libraries supporting lower- and upper-level undergraduates. W. F. Bell Aurora University

Booklist Review

Like other titles in the publisher's Almanacs of American Wars series, this set uses a day-by-day format to chronicle a major historical event. It begins with an overview of the U.S. involvement in the events leading up to the war. The daily chronology begins with October 28, 1922, when the Italian Fascist Party conducted their March on Rome, and ends on November 19, 1945, when General Dwight D. Eisenhower became the chief of staff of the U.S. Army. Each daily entry details strategy, activities in various theaters, and deployments and operations in geographic regions in each theater, sometimes reaching down to the level of individual personnel. The chronology is bolstered by black-and-white photos and illustrations. Following the chronology are an alphabetical list of American servicemen who received the Medal of Honor and brief bibliographies of 53 key leaders. A detailed glossary of terms and abbreviations and brief descriptions of weapons are also provided. The appendixes include several lists Ship and Landing Craft Classifications,   Commands,   Composition of Divisions, and more along with 19 black-and-white maps; for example, a map of the Battle of the Bulge shows the locations of U.S. forces and the U.S. Allied front on certain dates. A very extensive bibliography provides detailed references and is divided according to a specific aspect of the war. A comprehensive index is found only in volume 2. This is an excellent resource for high-school, public, and academic libraries. It complements works such as Facts On File's Encyclopedia of World War II (2007).--Harless, Carol Sue Copyright 2008 Booklist
