School Library Journal Review

Gr 8 Up While this brief introduction to Peron may provide some basic material for those researching his life, it is not the type of biography that one would read for enjoyment. The writing is uneven, lively in some places but dry and fact-laden in others. Likewise, the scattering of photos and quotations across the pages distracts readers' attention from the text itself. Al though an entire chapter is entitled ``Evita,'' only a few paragraphs therein are devoted to the woman whose story may be more interesting than Peron's (more information on her can be found in other sections of the book). Many of the photographs are of people and events only remotely related to the story. Those seek ing information on Peron the public figure will be well served; those interested in Pe ron the person will not. Dennis C. Tuck er, Bethel College, Mishawaka, Ind. (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review

Gr. 6-10. ``To this day, the name Juan Peron is the usual starting point of any discussion of Argentine politics.'' The book's accurate statement of Peron's pivotal role in Argentina's history is fully substantiated in this thoroughly researched and fluidly written biography of the longtime president and dictator. Opening with an engaging description of Peron's revealing manipulation of a 1945 mass demonstration, the book paints a backdrop of condensed Argentine history before chronicling the man's youth and military training. DeChancie offers more than just a description of Peron's activities as he became politically active; the author shows how Peron's reaction to the brutal upper-class rulers of his youth as well as his experiences with Mussolini's Fascist movement helped crystallize his ideology. Peron's cult-worshipped second wife, Evita, is given credit for part of the leader's popularity, while she is also accused of contributing to his 1955 ouster from office. In much the same neutral manner, DeChancie attempts to list both positive and negative qualities whenever possible, making this book a valuable historical study. With a time line, further reading list, and large black-and-white photographs. BAH. 982'.062 (B) Peron, Juan Domingo / Heads of state / Argentina History 1943- [CIP] 86-31749
