Here is the most comprehensive empirical study ever published about male prostitutes and their clients. Written by one of the most distinguished international scholars in psychiatry and criminal justice, this book provides a carefully designed presentation of in-depth interviews with several hundred London "rent boys." The interviews included a large sample of one-to-one conversations in a private room tape-recorded with the consent of the interviewees.

Dr. West and his colleague, Mr. de Villiers, bring you squarely into the everyday lives of male prostitutes and cover little known details of their lives, such as: the drift into homelessness sexual orientation entry into prostitution sexual orientation threats of blackmail, violence, and murder by male prostitutes or their clients attitudes and intentions of the male prostitutes post-prostitution careers, legal and criminology issues personal fears, desires, and interests of male prostitutes

Encyclopedic in scope and depth, Male Prostitution never strays from combining high-level research presented in a readily understandable and often entertaining style and incisive insights and issues critical for both the informed layperson and researchers in human sexuality. Dr. West and his colleague provide is a source of unbiased, detailed information on the male sex industry and their clients which is unavailable in any other book published to date.

CHOICE Review

West and De Villiers interviewed 61 hustlers, 43 call men, and 6 clients in London as part of the charity-funded Streetwise Youth Project. Although the interview schedule shows that quantitative data were collected, only qualitative data are reported. The authors concentrate on sex workers at the lower end of the industry, but acknowledge there are "substantial numbers of better established workers with good levels of education and social achievement." Ancillary data are reported from 29 former street workers, enabling cross-time comparisons. Data from Thailand, Amsterdam, San Francisco, and Morocco are used for cross-national comparisons. Most London respondents describe themselves as gay or bisexual. Virtually all respondents report coming from chaotic homes, but the researchers say there is no evidence to support the idea that being sexually abused as a child leads to adult prositution. Surprisingly few respondents report problems with the law, although a high incidence of violence is reported by both the prostitutes and their customers. This is an easily sensationalized topic, but transcripts of the interviews document the humdrum reality of prostitutes' lives. There are sections on homelessness, substance abuse, and health problems including AIDS. The authors call for relaxing the laws against prostitution and for making laws that control sexuality the same for both heterosexuals and gays. The appendix includes an excellent bibliography and glossary. General; advanced undergraduate; graduate; faculty; professional.
