Library Journal Review

"I think when I retire, I'll be a consultant. They make lots of money, set their own hours, take on projects they really want to do...." If such thoughts cross your mind, then this very general introduction by the president of a Canadian consulting firm specializing in strategies for information and library management in the public and private sectors may be just what you need. The author's brief guide is divided into two parts, with numerous tips blocked out throughout nine chapters. Part one focuses on whether consulting is right for you, while part two is for those readers who are determined to proceed with this career. Though the price seems a bit high for 90 pages of text plus preface, postscript, and index, the book does provide additional resources and may serve as a good jumping-off place for librarians longing to go out on their own and launch their own information management business.-B. Booklist Review

Librarians and other professionals in information-centric industries possess a unique mix of skills that coordinate well with consulting activities, either on a part-time or full-time basis, and this guide demonstrates how to earn one's living through consulting. De Stricker, a consultant for public- and private-sector organizations since 1972 and a frequent presenter at many U.S. and Canadian conferences, offers personal experience as well as the experiences of others to describe how to make the move. She discusses the pros and cons of consulting, how to develop business and marketing plans, and how to negotiate the contract and write a proposal. For readers who are interested in consulting, as well as seasoned consultants, a wealth of ideas is presented here.--Awe, Susan Copyright 2008 Booklist
