School Library Journal Review

Gr 7-10‘An examination of the turmoil in America's schools. After a brief description of the history of violence among youth and the possible causes of its increase, Day explores its incidences in schools. The remainder of the book is devoted to a discussion of the prevention and treatment of conflict among teens. Substantial information is presented on different methods and possible solutions for ending the crisis, along with suggestions for self-protection. Telephone helplines, a brief list for further reading (four of the five titles are published by Enslow), and an adequate index are appended. A few mediocre-quality black-and-white photos, mainly of anti-violence activists, illustrate the text. Although much of this information is available in other sources, the book does remain focused on school violence. Also, the author goes into a great deal of detail about student-led organizations that address the problem. The straightforward text filled with pertinent statistics and examples makes this title a good source for reports.‘Carol Fazioli, Cardinal Hayes Library, Manhattan College, NY (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review

Gr. 7^-12. Two new Issues in Focus titles analyze the phenomenon of escalating teen violence. Day outlines the problem of violence in schools, focusing mainly on guns, gangs, sexual harassment, and gay bashing. Teen violence rages in schools, families, among friends, and in the public arena, with devastating effects for immediate victims as well as their families and friends. Zeinert treats her subject primarily from the vantage point of the victims, though the opening chapter on teen violence and the numerous statistics and conclusions serve to treat the subject generally as well. More than just presenting one upsetting statistic after another, both books look to the causes of the problem and emphasize solutions, often student advocacy groups such as Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE). The contents are so similar the titles tend to blur, but both have an accessible, lively style, ideal for younger, beginning researchers and older students in need of handy statistics. Black-and-white photos, largely unremarkable, illustrate each text, and each one has a bibliography, source notes, and organizations list. Violence in Schools has a glossary as well. --Anne O'Malley
