Library Journal Review

As anyone who has been reading the newspapers or watching television news recently would agree, the banking industry in the United States has been having a difficult time. Part of the problem stems from ``bad loans'' made by U.S. banks. Who makes loans? More importantly, how does one go about applying for them? Dawson, a banking consultant and former banker, dissects the bank loan process in this book and offers guidelines (e.g., ``the seven most important questions'' lenders will ask) for prospective borrowers that will make their loans stand out and be seriously considered. Dawson offers no magic formulas or money-back guarantees. Extensive research and background work must be done. If it is done well, then ``the well-prepared applicant will be the successful borrower.'' This is a no-nonsense approach that should be retaught to today's lenders and borrowers. A useful primer recommended for business collections.-- Richard Drezen, Merrill Lynch Lib., New York (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. Booklist Review

The current "credit crunch" may increase interest in this compendium of sound advice for small-business borrowers; even in loose-money times, however, Dawson's insider view of commercial lending people, pressures, and strategies would be very helpful to business owners. Like the authors of many instructive how-to books, Dawson is a "turncoat," a former lending officer for several midwestern and southern banks and a veteran of the Texas banking wars, who now applies his banking experience as a credit consultant for owner-managed businesses. As in any other sales situation, Dawson stresses, the business owner (seller) needs to understand the "needs, motivations, and limits" of the banker (buyer). From the right (and wrong) way to select a bank--and a loan officer--to lending's seven key questions and the "Five Big Cs" of credit, Borrowing for Your Business gives readers the insights and information they need to build effective borrowing relationships. ~--Mary Carroll
