A text/reference emphasizing environmental and ecological interrelationships. Brings together various aspects of taxonomy, morphology, cytology, physiology, and biochemistry, in the unifying context of marine ecology. Covers four main areas: general marine plant life, highlighting economically important plants and angiosperms; algae; ecological concepts and research methods; and marine plant communities. Also examines marine bacteria and marine fungi. Includes field and laboratory experimental techniques suitable for direct application, photographs, line drawings and extensive references.

"A Wiley-Interscience publication."

Includes bibliographies and indexes.

CHOICE Review

This shortened, reorganized, and updated revision of Dawes's first edition (CH, May'82) has greater emphasis placed upon the ecology and physiology of marine plants and less on the taxonomy and survey of algal groups. Dawes introduces marine habitats with chapters on abiotic factors, biotic factors, and physiological ecology. Coverage of algal groups has been reduced from seven to two chapters, while chapters on seaweed communities, salt marshes, mangroves, seagrass, and plants of coral reefs have been expanded and strengthened. Also included is a new chapter on anthropogenic influences on marine plant communities. Methods for the study of marine plants have been moved to an appendix, as has a section on the economic uses of algae. Although it suffers from some sloppy editing, including a mislabeled chapter in the table of contents and incorrectly labeled or cited figures, this is the only current work that compares the biology and ecology of submerged (algae, seagrasses) and emergent (salt marshes and mangroves) marine plants. A readable, up-to-date book appropriate for upper-division undergraduate and graduate students in marine botany and as a general reference for botanists and marine ecologists. C. E.
