Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

From the arrival of Hispanicized Africans during the Age of Discovery to today's renewal of racial identities, the history of Africans in Latin America has been complex, their contributions numerous. It is precisely this complexity that the essays in Slavery and Beyond analyze, exploring geographical, regional, and other factors. The editor has selected ten topics through which to study the African dimension of Latin America, including the colonial era, religion, music, and intermarriage. Each topic is explained by the editor and then discussed in articles drawn from academic journals, monographs, and papers.

Filmography: p. 297-301.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 283-296).

CHOICE Review

Although its title is misleading--essays for the most part deal not with slavery in the region but with slavery's legacies (in some cases, during the very recent past)--the collection is useful and interestingly assembled. Davis's selections cover all parts of Latin America, from Haiti and Cuba to the Southern Cone, including Puerto Rico. All of the essays have been published before; some are abridged, but the volume does a service in bringing them together. Themes covered include Afro-Creole culture and religion, resistance, ideology, history, and nationalism. Some of the contributors are foreign scholars (George Reid Andrews, Peter Gerhard, Peter Wade, Michael L. Conniff, and Rebecca B. Bateman); others Latin Americans (Abdias do Nascimento, Armando Entralgo, David Gonz'alez L'opez, Aim'e C'esaire, and Luc de Heusch). Upper-division undergraduate students in history and African-American studies. R. M. Levine; University of Miami
