Library Journal Review

This collection of articles addresses legal issues surrounding AIDS. Sections include an introduction to legal concepts, medical background, public health strategies, schoolchildren, prostitution, housing, insurance, right to medical care and to confidentiality, and AIDS in the workplace, in the military, in prisons, and among gays, blacks, and intravenous drug users. Each section is extensively documented. This is a unique contribution to the literature. While it avoids ``legalese'' in order to appeal to laypersons, it should also find an audience among attorneys, policymakers, health practitioners, educators, and managers. Recommended for most collections. Judith Eannarino, George Washington Univ. Lib., Washington, D.C. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. CHOICE Review

An outstanding work on a subject vital to everyone: professionals, students, and general readers. Written by Yale faculty and students associated with the Yale AIDS Law Project, this well-written, well-organized book thoroughly debunks many current and common myths about AIDS. It is designed around the legal mechanisms and processes currently in place to deal with policy issues and conflicts. As such, a primary question is whether American jurisprudence has the means and capacity to address the legal matters that will inevitably arise out of the AIDS crisis. The volume begins with a fine chapter on law for nonlawyers, which nicely sets the stage for the remainder of the book. This is followed by coverage of medical issues including an excellent history of AIDS from 1981. Intensely human concerns are interwoven through detailed discussion of government and private responses to the epidemic. Contributions emphasize the burdens on health care resources, the escalation of conflict between medicine and law, and the malpractice crisis. Concluding sections include discussions of AIDS in the military and prisons and among groups such as the intravenous drug culture, blacks, gays, and lesbians. Well documented with 60 pages of notes and a bibliography. Highly recommended for all academic and public libraries.-D.R. Shanklin, University of Chicago

Booklist Review

These 20 readings directed to ``whoever has a professional need to come to grips with the legal issues spawned by the AIDS epidemic'' emanate from the Yale AIDS Law Project. Three articles provide medical background and historical perspective. Each of the others treats one aspect of the AIDS/legal system interface, citing and explaining relevant cases, laws, and court decisions in nontechnical language. They are arrayed in five broad topical parts on government responses to AIDS, private-sector responses, health-care provision, how prisons and the military are dealing with AIDS, and the AIDS-related concerns of three special groups (IV drug users, blacks, and gays), respectively. An excellent resource of which many libraries will want reference as well as circulating copies. Notes, glossary, selected bibliography, list of contributors; to be indexed.
