CHOICE Review

This book is an outgrowth of a series of six lectures presented at the annual Loyola Lecture Series in Political Analysis at the Loyola University of Chicago, delivered in the spring of 1981. It is an excellent overview of the link between linguistics and political philosophy. Dallmayr's primary concern is clarification of the political relevance of the contemporary ``linguistic turn'' in the 20th century. In doing so, his work surveys the complex linguistic panorama of the field of language and politics. In particular it discusses empiricism, behaviorism, rationalism, ordinary language philosophy, existentialism, transcendental hermeneutics, and poetic language as they are concerned with political philosophy. The book, written by a renowned philosopher in a style readable for the layperson, is also highly recommended for professionals in philosophy and linguistics. It is well bound, with extensive chapter notes and a good index. For graduate students and upper-division undergraduates.-M.D. Linn, University of Minnesota-Duluth
