CHOICE Review

College libraries usually consider handbooks of aquarium management to be out of scope, but such books are sought after in library stacks. Many students and faculty enjoy this popular hobby or need to set up and maintain aquariums in their research. The better guides, like Dakin's, serve as a useful reference to the species most commonly encountered in the trade. Dakin's lengthy section on invertebrates will be particularly helpful for the biology laboratory trying to maintain demonstration tanks for research or teaching. A detailed introduction exploring the biology of reef organisms is followed by advice on selecting, setting up, and maintaining the aquarium. Most of the text consists of a beautifully illustrated guide to 300 species, grouped by family, that are suited for home aquariums. Species accounts include recommended diet, tank behavior, and fish compatibility with invertebrate species. Appendixes provide a guide to typical marine algae, and a "rogue's gallery" of species to avoid. A subject index, species index, and glossary complete this useful and attractive reference book. B. E.
