Library Journal Review

Take one measure of design theory, add a cup of printing techniques, and fold in a tablespoon of ancient symbology. Add a dash of historical context, and mix well into a huge bowl of over 1800 gorgeous fabric designs. The ingredients make a luscious dessert known as Textile De signs . Meller, the owner of the fabrics depicted here, has interpreted her dessert in five different ways according to motif: floral, geometric, conversational, ethnic, and art movements and period styles. To please the most discriminating palate, she used only the best ingredients (some rarities dating to the 18th century) from her design library and design loft. The book is a colorful confection, but it is also a thoughtful and informative analysis of the artistic choices that are subconscious interpretations of the moods, longings, and aspirations of humankind. Highly recommended for design or decorative arts collections.-- Sherry Porter, Texas Coll. of Osteopathic Medicine, Fort Worth (c) Copyright 2010. CHOICE Review

An iconography of textile motifs and a vocabulary of pattern, this volume contains 1,823 full-color splendidly reproduced plates and is divided into five sections: Florals, Geometric, Conventional, Ethnic, Art Movements & Period Styles. Each section contains a plethora of themes such as botanicals, mosaics, plaids, and modern. Most of the designs shown come from the collection of the Design Library and the Design Loft in New York City. A preface explains how a book of this magnitude came to be; there is a wonderful "Explanation of Terms" and bibliography. The collection shown deals with cloth to be worn around the house and to work, to hang in windows, and to upholster the couch. The succinctly written introduction covers fabric origins, semantics of fabric names, fabrics' relationship to art movements and period styles, as well as historical and cultural aspects of fabric. Each page of plates has a description of fabric, carefully keyed pictures, notations on the country and year of origin, and a paragraph describing the fabric's characteristics. Meller has worked in the textile industry for 25 years and is the owner of the Design Library and Design Loft, which has one of the world's largest textile design collections. Elffers is a creator of visual books. Highly recommended for those involved in fabric design, fashion and interior design, graphic design, and textiles, and for students in these disciplines.-V. M. Booklist Review

At last, everyday textile designs, styles, layouts, and colors (from printed calicos and cottons to polka-dot silks) have been given a comprehensive focus. This volume offers the "revolutionary" organization of fabrics by motif, rather than by the periods in which they were produced. Motifs discussed include floral, geometric, conversational, ethnic, and art movements and period styles. The volume begins with a brief discussion of printed textiles, then Meller and Elffers draw upon a rich assortment of 1,823 color illustrations, which are labeled with dates and countries of origin, to discuss 200 years of European and American textile patterns. All pattern names are translated into French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Japanese. An invaluable resource for apparel and interior-design professionals, graphic artists, weavers, crafts enthusiasts, collectors, and mere lovers of patterned designs. --Janet Lawrence
