Library Journal Review

This bibliography is a selective guide to the secondary literature on pharmacy for graduate students, professors, scholars, and researchers who need an introduction to this field. Part 1 lists bibliographies, encyclopedias, dictionaries, company histories, and biographies. Special subjects such as pharmacy practice, laws and regulations, business aspects, and museology are covered in Part 2, while the last section is a unique bibliography of pharmacy in the arts. This work has several drawbacks. The brief annotations are of minimal value, electronic indexes to the literature of the history of pharmacy are excluded, and only an author index is provided. In addition, a list of libraries with collections in this specialized subject would have been useful. Of value only to research libraries with strong collections in the history of science and technology.‘Bruce Slusky, New Jersey Inst. of Technology Lib., Newark (c) Copyright 2010. CHOICE Review

As the only recent bibliography in English on the history of pharmacy, this will be a valuable acquisition for libraries collecting in pharmacy, history of medicine, or history of science. These authors have been selective rather than comprehensive. Coverage begins with the birth of pharmacy as a separate discipline, catalyzed by the interaction of Islamic and Western European cultures during the Middle Ages; it progresses to topics such as the portrayal of pharmacists in present-day film and fiction. The annotations evaluate each source and guide the reader to the relevant portions of larger works. Most entries cite important secondary sources, but primary sources have been added where descriptive, historical commentary enhances their value. English-language titles are preferred, but other languages have been listed when English titles are not available. The scope is international. There is a name index, but the lack of a subject index is a major drawback (readers interested, for example, in pharmacognosy will have to wade through 73 entries in "pharmaceutical disciplines" and 218 entries under "materia medica" to make sure they have located all relevant material.)
