Booklist Review

Poetry for children today shows a healthy "antisweetness, a sort of irreverent realism," according to X. J. Kennedy, one of the 16 poets who speak openly and informally in this fine collection of interviews. Other poets include Myra Cohn Livingston (who stresses craft), Lilian Moore (who connects poetry with the child's vision, wordplay, and sense of metaphor), Mary Hoberman (who talks about combining the silly and the realistic), Arnold Adoff (who discusses how he reaches out as poet and as anthologist), and Eloise Greenfield (who asks that multicultural literature not just be "squeezed into one little corner"). All the poets talk about how they write (with constant revision), who influenced them, and how they relate to children. Valerie Worth and several others talk about their technique in some detail. Copeland's brief introduction discusses commonalities among the poets, and his questions show a sensitivity to the individuality of each writer. Many librarians and teachers will come to this book to find out about a particular poet; the voices here will make them want to find more of the poetry. ~--Hazel Rochman
