Major questions have always existed concerning the role and status of Indian tribes and Indian peoples within the fabric of life in the United States. There is a relatively consistent body of law whose origins flow from precolonial America to the present day. This body of law is neither well-known nor well-understood by the American Public. Federal Indian law - or, more accurately, United States constitutional law concerning Indian tribes and individuals - is unique and separate from the rest of American jurisprudence. Analogies to general constitutional law, civil right law, public land law, and the like are misleading and often erroneous. Indian law is distinct. It encompassed Western European international law, specific provisions of the United States Constitution, precolonial treaties, treaties of the United States, an entire volume of the United States Code, and numerous decisions of the United States Supreme Court and lower federal courts.

CHOICE Review

A directory of all federal and state reservations in the US arranged by state, with subarrangement by reservation name. Entries provide tribal name, county name, tribal headquarters name, size of lands held, tribal history and culture, modern governmental forms used, 1969 statistical information on the population on and off the reservation, employment status, information on the economy of the reservation, transportation, community facilities available, and climatic facts. The source is sponsored by the Confederation of American Indians, whose purposes are to prepare books on Indians, promote the public image of the American Indian, and improve opportunities available to Indians in America. Many recent reference works on American Indians provide name/address information on Indian reservations; this book turns out to be a revision of the US Department of Commerce's Federal and State Indian Reservation and Trust Areas (rev. ed., 1974) that reflects changes in organization of Alaskan native peoples caused by the 1971 Alaskan Native Claims Settlement Act, changes in the economic situation and community facilities (e.g, health care, utilities available), and alterations in the numbers of reservations in each state. Entries for some states (e.g., Wisconsin), have been rewritten only minimally. The new work still relies on 1969 demographic information. It concludes with a subject index including primarily county, tribal, and reservation names. Recommended for large reference collections.-A.H. Widder, Michigan State University

Booklist Review

The introduction to this excellent and authoritative reference book describes the relationship of Indians to the rest of the United States, noting the constitutional nature of that relationship in law and observing that some traditions go back to Indian dealings with the British crown. What is lacking is any attempt to note the scope of the book and any clarification of terms. The lack of maps is not crucial in light of the maps that are issued by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the U.S. Geological Survey, and a few other agencies. It would have been nice to have had a list appended noting defunct reservations. The work is arranged alphabetically by reservation within state listings. Each reservation is noted in the detailed table of contents. The format for each entry is uniform except where a feature does not apply. An entry contains the name, status (whether a federal reservation, a federal trust, a state reservation, or a native village), location in the state (usually county or equivalent), tribe(s) resident, tribal headquarters location, land status (tribal land, allotted land, non-Indian land, government land, all given in acres), history (of both the tribe and the reservation), culture, governmental form (elected council, tribal elders, etc.), population profile (dates vary, usually 1969 and 1980 or 1984), tribal economy, climate, transportation, utilities, recreation, and community facilities. A thorough index concludes the volume. For questions dealing with Indian reservations, this is an excellent reference book with which to start. The large amount of concisely presented information may well be all that a user needs. A basic work for academic libraries and medium-sized to large public libraries.
