CHOICE Review

Combs-Orme's book was written to assess the role of social workers in the field of maternal and child health. The author stresses the need to rename the field "family health," with emphasis on "healthy reproduction and parenting." Each chapter deals with a major area of the field and includes social work practice roles and related social policy issues for each area. Combs-Orme addresses the topics of prenatal care, high-risk infant care, infant death, care for young and disabled children, family planning, adolescent pregnancy, and ethical issues in the field of practice. The book is extremely informative, with extensive references. It provides a comprehensive and integrated perspective of the field drawn from various sources and is of particular value to those in the child, family, or health care areas of social work practice. Academic libraries, community college level up. -M. O. McMahon, East Carolina University
