CHOICE Review

These articles, written by British and South African specialists, discuss South African problems related to the economy, democratization and social policy, education, and the role of the media; they also provide an overview of sustainable development (SD) and the peace process. Drawing on his experience and insights in the developing states of Honduras, Nicaragua, Peru, and Swaziland, Cole (Univ. of East Anglia) concludes the volume with a short but thoughtful and incisive analysis of SD as an idea that links environmentalism and development. Cole summarizes the whole spectrum of thought ranging from the conservative reactions of privileged people anxious not to risk the loss of their advantage, whether resources are diminishing or not, to the beliefs of those who hold that a sustainable environment is contingent upon a society based on fairness, justice, and cooperation and that this can be achieved through challenging technical reforms. Cole's forceful and uncompromising conclusions assert that if people in South Africa are to succeed in their struggle for a sustainable lifestyle, the political implications of alternative policy prescriptions must be addressed. The book provides a valuable overview of the issues involved, and a basis for understanding what prospects the future holds for South Africa. Upper-division undergraduate through faculty. R. M.
