Booklist Review

Clifton is founder and CEO of his own consulting firm, now part of SRI/Gallup; Nelson is author of such popular financial planning books as The Joy of Money (Stein and Day, 1975) and Where to Get Money for Everything (Morrow, 1982). Their message here is deceptively simple (and not necessarily original)--discover what it is that you do best and do only that. Obversely, stop doing what you don't do well. Clifton and Nelson suggest that this advice applies equally to individuals and to businesses. The complicating factor is that one's strengths--and weaknesses--are not always readily apparent. The authors interweave anecdote, research, and case history to demonstrate their five steps toward identifying personal and organizational strengths and their four methods for managing weaknesses. They argue that national productivity would improve dramatically if we would stop trying to fix what we're doing wrong and concentrate on what we're doing right. Anyone or any organization that is having problems setting goals or developing strategies will benefit from this readable blueprint. ~--David Rouse
