CHOICE Review

This is not the usual Twayne book--i.e., a general introduction to the works of the author under consideration. That volume was written by Marcel Tetel (Rabelais, Sep'67). Rather, Zegura and Tetel's is a specialized study of Rabelais based on the metaphor of monetary exchange paralleling literary exchange. It is, therefore, not for those coming to the works of this Renaissance writer for the first time; it presupposes a familiarity with the Pantagrueline tales and the basic studies already written. The book is well written and well documented, displaying knowledge of recent criticism (the annotated bibliography is very much up to date). Although the initial focus may not be to everyone's liking, the metaphor is carried through a study of each of the four unquestioned Pantagrueline books, and a slight reference is made to the fifth book, although it is not studied in depth. Advanced undergraduate through faculty. C. E. Campbell; Cottey College
