Booklist Review

Much of this volume has little to do with libraries specifically. Bielefield and Cheeseman consider libraries as part of the larger employer market that is interested in work laws. Nevertheless, their book is worthwhile, providing a quick-reading, easy-to-follow understanding of employment laws. Coverage includes a historical look at the "Doctrine of At-Will Employment," the constitutional rights and due process of employees, the issue of privacy, antidiscrimination laws, hiring and promotion, dismissal and demotion, working conditions and benefits, unions and labor associations in libraries, and volunteers. Where appropriate, the authors cite court cases, and they append state-by-state summaries of equal employment opportunity statutes' coverage as well as the limitations on at-will discharge or dismissal. ~--Patrick Dewey
