CHOICE Review

Smith's purpose in preparing this book is "to persuade organic chemists to learn more about the properties of solids in order that they might consider using them in their own research." The book's 12 chapters are each written by a practicing organic chemist with specific expertise in the particular topic, and are divided into four sections. The first section deals with the general structures and properties of solids that have been used as catalysts and supports. The second and third sections survey the use of solids in standard organic reactions and in biological chemistry, respectively. The fourth section describes some special research topics. There is a significant bibliography at the end of each chapter. The writing style would allow the book to be used by advanced undergraduates, although it is probably not a necessary acquisition for most undergraduate libraries. It does, however, provide a good introduction to the field for graduate students and faculty. P. A. Gebauer; Monmouth College (IL)
