CHOICE Review

Cassidy is president of National Scholarship Research Service (San Rafael, CA), which also publishes The Scholarship Book (3rd ed., 1990; 1st ed., CH, Apr'85) and The Graduate Scholarship Book (2nd ed., 1990; 1st ed., CH, Oct'88). In this new guide, 1,748 entries (one third of them duplicates) derive from the firm's database and provide organization name, address, and telephone number; amount awarded; deadlines; fields of study; and brief description. An additional 378 entries cite career information guides and other scholarship directories. More than one third of the entries in the "Country of Intended Study" category pertain to the US. First-time users will find the arrangement confusing. Index codes are insufficiently explained, and the "Field of Study Index," based upon a broad classification scheme, sorely lacks keyword access by specific major. The main section allows for browsing by discipline, but it is probably necessary to use the "Quick Find Index," arranged by geographic area of intended study, country of residence, and other categories specific to the user's background or requirements. Some categories have far too many entries to look up. An alphabetical index lists sponsoring organizations. General attention to detail is lacking; the British Commonwealth is listed as a continent. Still, the informational value outweighs minor annoyances. Recommended for both undergraduate and graduate students. -C. B. Thurston, University of Texas at San Antonio
