Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

Growing Up Good is an international investigation of the ways in which gendered behaviour is imposed on girls through European criminal justice systems. The book successfully combines a feminist critique of criminological theory with in-depth research on girls′ actual experience of court procedures and custodial regimes. Vivid accounts of institutional life and alternative treatment demonstrate the implicit and explicit reinforcement of gender stereotypes, male and female, despite or even because of avowed intentions about equal treatment.

CHOICE Review

The feminist authors of these studies reporting on the policing of girls' behavior in Europe find that not only are criminal actions policed but also that nontraditional female behavior gets the attention of the authorities. Both formal and informal policing focus on training girls to be traditional females, i.e., dependent on males, passive, nurturing, etc. This pattern exists in varying degrees of directness in all the countries from which reports are given. The studies consist mostly of interviews, small-group studies, and participant observer fieldwork. The appendix provides some comparative statistics. A reference list and an index are included. An outgrowth of an Italian conference, the volume suffers from the varied quality and different perspectives of the individual studies; but its central point--that social workers, the juvenile justice systems, and much of society in Europe still define women and girls in terms of their relationships to males and pressure females into gendered behaviors--is strongly made.
