How do quantitative methods help us to acquire knowledge of the real world? What are the `do′s′ and `don′ts′ of effective quantitative research?
This refreshing and accessible book provides students with a novel and useful resource for doing quantitative research. It offers students a guide on how to: interpret the complex reality of the social world; achieve effective measurement; understand the use of official statistics; use social surveys; understand probability and quantitative reasoning; interpret measurements; apply linear modelling; understand simulation and neural nets; and integrate quantitative and qualitative modelling in the research process.
Jargon-free and written with the needs of students in mind, the book will be required reading for students interested in using quantitative research methods.
Includes bibliographical references (p. [166]-170) and index.

CHOICE Review
Byrne provides useful information on data analysis to students and researchers in the social and behavioral sciences. He very carefully distinguishes between "analysis" and "interpretation"--the former more concerned with establishing a cause and the latter with elucidation of meaning. Emphasis here is on gaining insight into causal processes of the social world and interactions between social and natural worlds through measurement as opposed to analysis. Chapters 1 and 2 stress the nature of objects measured and the nature of measurement as a process. Other chapters discuss data collection to generate representative accounts of the social world--interpretation and use of measurements, nature of social surveys, and the use of probabilistic reasoning in quantitative research; actual interpretation of data--exploration, description, and classification; and discussion of the general linear model, procedures of simulation and neural net approaches, and the relationship between quantitative and qualitative data "analysis." Combined subject-author index; chapter notes and conclusions. No mathematics is used in descriptions. Students and researchers in the social sciences using data analysis will find this book interesting and useful. Recommended. Graduate students; faculty. D. V. David Byrne (born May 14, 1952) is a Scottish-American musician and artist perhaps best known as a founding member and principal songwriter of the new wave band Talking Heads, which was active between 1974 and 1991. Since then, Byrne has released his own solo projects on record, and worked in a variety of media, including film, photography, opera, and Internet-based projects. He has received Grammy, Oscar, and Golden Globe awards for his achievements. In 1981, Byrne partnered with choreographer Twyla Tharp, scoring "The Catherine Wheel," a ballet prominently featuring unusual rhythms and lyrics. Productions of "The Catherine Wheel" appeared on Broadway that same year.
Byrne is also known for his activism in support of increased cycling, and for having used a bike as his main means of transport for most of his life, especially cycling around New York, where he has designed innovative bicycle parking racks. He has written widely on cycling, including a 2009 book, Bicycle Diaries. In August 2009, he auctioned his Montague folding bike in order to raise money for the London Cycling Campaign. His title Bicycle Diaries made the New York Times Best Seller List for 2011.
