Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

A comprehensive overview of the policy debates surrounding U.S. public lands and the natural resources they contain. Bryner traces the origin and evolution of policy, and the current debate in Congress and within the Clinton administration over public lands and natural resources. He also assesses policy options in light of ecological principles and examines the importance of public lands and natural resources in the nation's environmental quality and in the quality of life the environment will provide for future generations. This book will be a useful reference for policymakers, environmental studies students, and anyone concerned with the future of our public lands and natural resources.

CHOICE Review

Besides explaining the major issues regarding public lands under the control of the national government, Bryner (Brigham Young Univ.) describes current laws and policies and informally evaluates the abilities of policy alternatives to preserve ecosystems in the American West. Refreshingly, he explicitly states his own conclusions regarding the impact of alternatives. Bryner writes accurately and with sensitivity, insight, and fairness (except for an inattentive section on nuclear power and radioactive waste management). The final chapter is an eloquent plea for sustainable policies and practices. Despite these strengths, there are problems. Bryner seems torn between the norms of a traditional descriptive textbook and his desire to defend a thesis: that using public lands as an economic resource is not a sensible basis for public policy in the West. Despite the subtitle, his chatty book has no succinct statement of issues, players, and positions. Finding particular information is difficult because chapters meander among descriptions of actual policies, evaluation of outcomes, and presentation of issue positions. Editing should have eliminated repetitive material. Despite limitations, a valuable source for upper-division undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty. R. E. O'Connor Pennsylvania State University, University Park Campus
