YA --Librarians throughout the nation nominated the more than 100 individuals included in this book. Ranging from actors to scientists, politicians to sports figures, the entries include a one-third page photo, a quote, a sidebar citing birth and accomplishments, and one to three pages of readable biography. Addresses are frequently given. Many subjects (Martin Luther King, Jr., Mother Teresa, etc.) are in traditional biographical reference sources. Some of the people listed who are not in Current Biography include Rosa Parks, James Meredith, Terry Fox, Ernesto Cardinale, and Candy Lightner. The book opens with a five-page introduction that defines heroes and their role in society. Included are a list of people by occupation and a detailed index.
