Recipient of Choice Magazine′s 1996 Outstanding Academic Book Award Author Raymond Morrow outlines and recounts the development of the major tenets of critical theory, exemplifying them through the works of two of their most influential, recent adherents: Jürgen Habermas and Anthony Giddens. Beginning with a comprehensive yet meticulous explication of critical theory and its history, the author next discusses it within the context of a research program; his work concludes with an examination of empirical methods. Emphasizing the connections between critical theory, empirical research, and social science methodology, Morrow′s volume offers refreshing insights on traditional and current material.

Includes billiographical references (p. 322-349) and index.

CHOICE Review

The authors have written this highly sophisticated book apparently as a response to the contemporary postmodern condition, which has fundamentally called into question the claims that originally inspired the Enlightenment project of social science. They seek a reconstituted critical theory minus its founders' disdain for positivism. For this reason, at least half the book deals with methodological issues and attempts to introduce what the authors call "interpretive structuralism" as an alternative to both traditional positivism and the postmodern rejection of methodology. The authors address what seems to be the widest possible range of theories, theorists, and issues that pertain to critical theory, but they focus especially on two of the foremost social theorists of the age, J"urgen Habermas and Anthony Giddens. The authors move historically from Marx through the works of Max Horkheimer and Theodor Adorno to the most recent work in poststructuralism, postmodernism, and hermeneutics, but always with an eye on empiricism. The book is clear, well written, and incredibly thorough. The references are overwhelming, the index adequate. Highly recommended for upper-division undergraduate and graduate libraries. S. G.
